Remembering

Presentations in celebration of el Dia de los Muertos

As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, Ms. Stanford has her students prepare remembrance boxes of someone close to them who has passed. The boxes usually include a poem or other writing, and objects that capture the spirit and energy of the person being remembered. Students then present their work to the class.

Five students from Ms. Bass' 8th grade class used our school Sony Handycams to document the 6th grade student presentations. This was their first time out with the cameras, and was something of a training mission for the videographers. Our Handycams do not have an external mic input, so the audio was captured by the built-in mic located on the top/front of the camera. As a result, you can hear comments from the videographers -- we need to work on that.

Shooting the video is only part of the process. The videographers need to review their work and assess it. The video footage will also be part of Ms. Stanford's project in developing student presentation skills. When students have the chance to see their presentations, they will have a broader basis for self-assessment. It will help them see themselves as an audience (in this case, the five cameras) see them.

I find the presentations very moving. Unfortunately, you cannot see the boxes very well. They are all quite remarkable. We will have pictures of those soon.
